Tidings from the West

What is a Master? - One of the primary purposes of our craft is to achieve a state of mastery. Our most exalted ritual is to remind us of the sacrifice of the masters that have walked before us, refusing to sacrifice honor, integrity, virtue or personnel conscience. Rather than sacrificing those elements of their spiritual being, they chose death of the flesh.

Robert Lomas, in his work “The Supernatural Secrets of the Freemasons”, speaks of the focus of our craft, which is to restore the secrets that were lost with the untimely death of our first grand master. In our degree work, it is mentioned that we may never find the secrets of a master mason, but none the less, are encouraged to work towards that noble goal.

The great lights of masonry teach us of the importance to square our actions, and circumscribe our passion towards all mankind, but most especially to our brothers in the craft. The emblems that represent those concepts, the square and compasses; rest upon an open bible, the inestimable gift of God to men, to guide and direct our faith and practices.

Within the sacred writ, in both testaments, are multiple examples of mastery, of which we are told to emulate. Of this I wish to speak.

What is a master?

We speak of masters because of the work they did among humanity, where their passion and actions were focused on the evolution of the human family. Among the esoteric circles of the craft, this passion and desire is known as the Great Work. And those that took upon themselves the challenge of the Great Work sacrificed all for the work, putting the love and respect of all life above personal desires, wealth and comfort.

The masters knew that what once was … could once again be achieved.

Fraternally,
